The Democratization of Data: An Ambitious IoT Portfolio              by Vishnu Vemulapati and Srikar Josyula

Rapidly advancing technology has been widening the gap between the underprivileged and the highly developed with regards to the unequal access of data. In this portfolio, we hope to explore the ways through which simple IOT-based technology can eliminate the third party expense and guarantee the benefits of data to even those with little exposure and experience with technology.

The Internet of Things: An Overview

Our Servuces
What does IOT mean?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices that transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human interaction.

What are some examples?

Google Home, Amazon's Alexa, Echo, Nest Thermostat, Ring Doorbell, August:Smart Lock, Apple's HomePod

What do We Plan to do With it?

We want to reduce the complexity of accessing data by starting with the design, so that the information, potentially life-saving, can be easily and inexpensively utilized.

In Less Developed Countries, residents of an apartment building have to turn on a motor that pumps groundwater up to a tank on the terrace of the building. Water overflows the tank if no one checks to see if the tank (sitting on the highest floor of the building) is filled up.

Bringing the internet of things to solve this issue...
  • If we place ultrasonic sensors on the top of the water tank, it can calculate the distance between the top of the tank and the water filling up. The sensor can then produce data in real time to show the remaining capacity of the tank. After viewing this information on an internet-enabled cellular device, the man/woman can turn of the motor accordingly. This avoids the waste of water and eliminates the need to climb up a flight of stairs to constantly check up on the status of the water tank and its remaining capacity.

"I think frugality drives innovation, just like other constraints do. One of the only ways to get out of a tight box is to invent your way out. "

- Jeff Bezos

IoT has successfully breached the consumer market with many useful devices that make our everyday lives easier. With a little more work IOT can be used in rural and developing areas to ensure and raise awareness of environmental conditions and possibly, make their lives a little easier.
